You do not need to be flying to practice your scan!! If you know your power/pitch combinations, you can follow along and train your eyes/scan to come back to the control instruments after short scans to the performance instruments. This will work your "data collection" part of a scan and get you used to patterns as well as interpreting & reading the instruments quickly. As you see errors, you should be thinking about what you need to do to correct. As mentions, you don't need to be flying to practice this part of scanning.
