Radio Calls
You will need to know all of the radio calls as part of learning the checklist and various procedures. There are a plethora of different radio calls riddled throughout the FWOP on what you need to report or say. While instrument flights, pattern operations, and course rules all have different radio calls, the main focus of this page is to get you started with the communication and radio calls required during the checklist procedures (i.e. KNSE operations).
Below, you will find a gouge sheet for the homefield radio calls that you can place on your kneeboard incase you forget what to say or draw a blank. You will also find several MP3 files with the audio transmissions from North Whiting ATIS, Clearance, Ground, and Tower. These are intended to help you listen and tune your ear to how radio communications will transpire. You can try writing down the ATIS as it cycles to see if you can follow along fast enough. You should also be able to identify where and what the aircraft making the calls are doing (FWOP). Realize that you will hear many versions and modifications to the FWOP/FTI standard radio calls...it's the nature of the beast.

Radio Call Kneeboard Sheet
The Radio Call gouge is a simple sheet that has the required FWOP radio calls on it for KNSE operations during the execution of the checklist. It is there as a crutch to help remind you, should you forget. You can print it out and put it on your kneeboard just in case you draw a blank while running the checklist. Try to wean yourself from it as quickly as possible.

Radio Call Audio Files
You can either listen to the audio files directly or download them and listen. They contain recorded live radio transmissions from the various agencies you will talk to at homefield. By listening to these, you can practice catching what they say and try to anticipate where you would be and what you would be doing (FWOP parts of the checklist). You may also try writing out ATIS in a timely manner as it is given so you do not need to hear it 3-4 times before getting all the information.
Important!! We used a VOX system for recording so the recordings will have almost no space/time break between the radio transmissions. Thus, the calls come back to back really fast. Realize the missing element of time exists but will be normal when you are out there in the real world. We chose to do this to keep the files small. Also, as we get more recordings we will continue to update the files to longer ones. We hope this helps "tune" your ear to the radios.
